The Marracuene district celebrated last Tuesday (02), the GWAZA MUTHINI, a historic event that marks the official opening of the traditional drink UKANYI (canhu juice).
Marracuene, also challenged by Covid-19, did not yield to the pandemic and celebrated the 126th anniversary of the Battle of Coolela fought on November 7, 1895. The history of Marracuene with its crossed rivers and a stunning remote landscape in the 19th century with the braking of fights such as that of MAGUWE occurred on September 8, 1895, Battle of Coolela on November 7 of the same year and the Resistance of Maguiguana Cossa on August 10, 1897.
Gwaza Muthini recalls the firm opposition of Mozambicans in the fight against colonialism, where figures such as the Mahazules, Matibjana and Mabjaia stand out who did everything so that the Portuguese did not remain in Mozambique.
“We will have to celebrate Gwaza Muthini as usual” who says so is the Governor of Maputo Province Júlio Parruque.
Parruque also said that the format of the celebration of the anniversary clearly shows that the Government is investing so that the covid-19 does not spread as well as thinking about the attacks in Cabo Delgado, “as long as we cannot go to the north of the country and fight, there is to repudiate this macabre act ”, he said.
Shafee Sidat, Administrator of Marracuene, said that the celebration of the day is not the same due to the adversities that the country is going through mainly because of the covid-19.
Sidat, also advanced that the day of Gwaza Muthini was preceded by the launch of the “canhu” season among various activities and the farewell of the Mabjaia.
The event, which for some sellers was a business opportunity, many of them were forced to return to their homes because in the midst of the pandemic the celebrations underwent changes.
